Ocucon is an asset protection company that uses technology to give retailers across the country more ways to monitor and protect their premises.

The firm’s digital solutions are a crucial part of how customers interface with its technology. Ococuon developed a new technology that allowed selective pixelation of people in CCTV footage. But, this new technology was to be offered to customers with different payment models - which meant Ocucon needed a flexible payment system to sell its service.

Ocucon’s requirement for an intuitive online payment system that not only facilitated the varied needs of large retail accounts departments but also provided flexibility for different payment models, meaning the team needed a capable development team with a proven track record and excellent problem-solving abilities. So, Ocuccon needed:

  • Needed a payment system that could support complex customer payment requirements (different ways to pay such as invoicing, payment credits etc). >

  • Wanted the ability to expand past the Pixelate product and offer more technology through the same payment system. >

  • Needed a digital-first solution that provided an intuitive customer experience.>

Experience Under The Belt

Enter KOMODO. We had already worked on a similar payment gateway system for another large North East business, which meant that Ocucon came to us because of our reputation AND we already knew we could add real value to the project.

Working through a discovery process with Ocucon meant we were able to define clear pathways that would result in a robust digital payment system that would be an invaluable interface for Ocucon’s customers. By integrating with the current development team at Occucon, we got a solid grasp of their systems and how we could add the most value.


Learning The Journey

What works for one business, won’t work for another. Defining the needs of the product was key to moving forwards.

The data that the Ocucon team utilised in-house was not suitable for applications. Though their techniques were clear and made sense for their team’s purposes, they would not work well if utilised to build a payment platform.

This meant that KOMODO had to take Ocucon’s data and way of working and then create new ways to handle data in a way that worked for a lightweight application.


A Human Approach

Sometimes the best digital technology is never going to be able to match human experiences.

In this project, our team spotted the challenge posed by ‘custom’ deals that some customers negotiated with Ocucon. By understanding that human intervention was needed, we could then create moments in the system when human intervention occurred.

This meant deciding that custom subscriptions were to be handled via human salespeople rather than the system itself.


Collaboration Is Key

Ocucon’s team had already worked with agencies in the past and they were hesitant about how the process would work.

By integrating them into our Slack channels, including them where necessary in internal standups and by keeping them informed through weekly calls, we kept the client ‘in the loop’ throughout the process.

Crucially, our workshop phase also helped them understand the way we think and to trust our studio’s 3-3-5 process.


Our process ultimately led to the delivery of a competent digital payment system that customers could utilise efficiently.

In turn, this meant Ocucon could more easily manage payments and was also able to begin devising a new marketplace offering that would allow customers to purchase different services intuitively.

The project also made us even prouder of the reputation we’ve built - as it was only through referrals for similar work that Ocucon placed trust in us. In all, we solved the firm’s challenges by:

  • Creating a digital payment system presented through an intuitive application interface.

  • Establishing a solution that could be expanded into a ‘marketplace’ that would allow Ocucon to offer more digital services to customers through a centralised payment system.

  • Reinterpreting in-house data to create a lightweight application that wouldn’t burden devices.
