About
Komodo is a senior-led product studio in Newcastle. We've been building software since 2003, for everyone from police forces to fast-growing private firms. We're built for established UK businesses that depend on digital but don't have their own development team, or have one that's out of capacity.
Therecord
23
Years designing and building software in Newcastle. Komodo was founded in 2003.
350+
Projects delivered for our clients, and counting.
250+
Ambitious organisations we've worked alongside, and still do.
Plenty of outfits can build you something fast now. The question is who's still around in year three. We've been here since 2003.
We havedone this before
The story
When Komodo opened in 2003, there was no iPhone, no cloud, and “an app” wasn't something you could buy.
Since then the ground has moved under this industry three or four times: the web went mobile, software moved out of server rooms, and products people once installed became products people just open. We shipped through all of it.
Each time, the same thing turned out to be true. The tools change; the job doesn't. Understand the problem properly, design something people can use without a manual, engineer it so it holds up, and stand behind it after it ships. Teams that hold onto that survive a platform shift. Teams that confuse the tools for the job don't.
AI is the biggest re-tooling we've seen, and we've made the move the same way we made the others: deliberately, with senior people in charge of it. Our workflow has AI working through it now, and 23 years of shipping is exactly what makes that safe. The judgement about what good looks like, what breaks under real users, and what shouldn't ship yet was built long before the tools got fast.
So we won't sell you a revolution. The honest version is that the tools are extraordinary and the standards are the ones we've always had. How that works in practice is on How we build with AI. What it means for a project, start to finish, is on How we work.
Mindsetmatters
Our approach
We work best with organisations that care about getting it right, not just getting it shipped. Understanding, creativity and intelligence are how we approach every piece of work.
Understanding
Discovery first. We form a proper appreciation of the problem, the people it belongs to, and how the work actually happens, before anything gets designed or priced.
Creativity
Iteration. We prototype different answers to the challenge and play with them, with you and your users, until the right one shows itself.
Intelligence
Smart tooling. AI runs through our workflow under senior judgement, so the right answer gets built better and faster.
How an engagement runs
Every project here runs the same path: two free conversations, a paid discovery whose outputs you keep, a build priced in writing, then 12 months of maintenance as standard. The whole thing, step by step, with how the money works, is on How we work.
30 minutes, free, no obligation. We reply within one working day.
Whoyou'll meet
The team
These are the people who run the studio. By your second conversation you're talking to two of them: Andy, our founder, and one of our senior engineering or design heads. Both of those calls are free. That senior head is in the room from that conversation and stays accountable for your project through the build.
Andy Greener
Founder and Managing Director
Started Komodo in 2003. Runs the business, owns the direction, and is usually one of the two people on your briefing call.
Jase Christie
Projects Director
Accountable for every project moving through the studio, from first briefing to delivery.
Phoebe Dowley
Client Partner
Keeps things running smoothly between you and the production team, and is your commercial point of contact through the project.
Tom Wood
Design Director
Leads design and user experience on everything we ship, and joins the briefing when the work is design-shaped.
Frazer Lillie
Head of AI Engineering
Leads how we build with AI, and is usually the technical voice in the room when we scope and price your build.
Mike Flowers
Head of Mobile Development
Leads everything we ship to a phone, from first build to store release.
Dan Carney
Head of Web Development
Leads everything we ship to the web, from first build to launch.
Nicola O'Neill
Head of Business Operations
Runs the operational side of the studio: finance, people and the day to day.
Ross Cooney
Chief Technology Officer
Advises on our technical strategy and steers the bigger, more complex commercial conversations.
Still
here in
year three
The first step is a 30-minute call with Andy or one of our senior team, in plain English. If we're not the right fit, we'll say so and point you at someone who is.
