Building With Nature runs a national standard for green infrastructure. When a housing scheme or a park claims it is good for wildlife, water and the people who live there, Building With Nature is how that claim gets independently assessed and accredited, through a network of trained assessors working to a rigorous benchmark.
The process worked, but the machinery behind it did not scale. Registering a project, assessing it, auditing the evidence and awarding accreditation all ran on spreadsheets, Word documents and shared folders. As the standard grew and more assessors and developments came on board, that way of working became the bottleneck.
A national environmental standard, run on spreadsheets. Our job was to turn it into a platform that could grow.
We started by mapping the whole accreditation journey with the Building With Nature team, from a project first registering through to a final award, so the system fit the way they actually work rather than forcing them to change it.
Then we designed and built a bespoke Digital Accreditation System: a web application that replaced the spreadsheets and shared folders with one searchable, role-based platform. The Building With Nature team and their national network of assessors each see exactly what they should, with different access rights for each type of user. It was delivered in phases against their funding, starting with a working MVP, and built to grow with the standard.
Building With Nature were running a national standard on spreadsheets. The job was to give them a platform that could scale with the mission, and then stay and look after it. Four years on we are still running and improving it.
What we did, and kept doing
The result is a national environmental standard that no longer runs on spreadsheets, and a platform that has grown with it. It has been live since 2022, and the part we are most proud of is the least glamorous one: we are still here, four years later, running and improving it. That is what a partner for years actually looks like.

We really enjoyed working with the Komodo team to develop our new Digital Accreditation System, and were really happy with the final result. Komodo took the time to fully understand our processes and delivered on our complex requirements around different access rights for each user type. Workshopping elements were fun and interactive, and design tools like Miro and Figma at the wireframe stage really helped us visualise the user experience.
