We caught up with Tyler, resident chatterbox and the king of conversation starters in Slack. Tyler has joined us from Northumbria Uni to gain some experience outside his degree - and it’s safe to say, he’s settled right in. We wanted to get to know how he’s getting on at KOMODO and what he gets up to in the design team.

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Tyler, I’m an Associate Digital Designer here at KOMODO. I am currently in my university ‘sandwich’ year in my university course. I’m studying Interaction Design at Northumbria University in Newcastle. For my ‘Sandwich Year’, I need to gain valuable experience within the design industry. Where better than KOMODO?

What does your typical day look like?

Due to the new day-to-day life that Covid has created, I've spent a lot of time working from home, so a routine is vital. I wake up and go to sleep at the same time, and I make sure I’m sitting at my desk at the same time every morning. I work a standard 9am-5pm schedule, which I love. A plan is in place first thing in the morning, allowing the day ahead to flow, which ensures all tasks are completed by the end of the day.

We mostly work in Sprints, which means we have 5-days (or at times 10-days), to complete a set of tasks. This is a great way of working, as it allows us to be more productive, whilst having the ability to identify any issues/difficulties within the project, and quickly resolve them!

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Within my role as an Associate Digital Designer, I work with a great variety of the team to solve problems (big and small), and to get projects complete. The methods and processes we take as a team allows things to get done, exactly how we want them. A detailed plan allows me and the team to get the project finished on time, to a high standard.

The thing is about design, it’s so simple! That’s why it’s so complicated. Finding solutions for the problems that users face on a daily basis, and having the ability to see how your own work can make such a difference, is really rewarding.

What attracted you to KOMODO?

Prior to my interview, I had already had a virtual meeting with some of the KOMODO team and created a few connections on LinkedIn with the team. I visited the website to explore some of the projects they’ve worked on, KOMODO’s design process, and the final outcomes of the projects. I was impressed, to say the least.

During my interview, I asked about the design processes in further detail, exploring KOMODO’s ways of working. I was instantly attracted to the typical working day (and luckily, I got the job!)

What are you looking forward to most?

Since starting, I’ve been welcomed to the team amazingly! I have never felt so welcomed into a job role before, so my first day was a doddle. I look forward to waking up in the morning and doing my job. I’m excited to see what potential I have, and how I can progress within KOMODO in the future. It’s great to be a part of this amazing family.

I’m also excited to be in the new office (spoilers…). Having a new creative workspace will allow incredible opportunities within the design team, and beyond!

What one piece of advice would you give to someone looking to join KOMODO?

Don’t worry. Since starting at Komodo, I have been made to feel so welcome. Everyone introduced themselves, arranged meetings to say hello, and made me feel at home. You won’t feel awkward or left out. You just get to be yourself, which is great!

If you could exist in a fictional universe, which would you choose?

I love Doctor Who, and have done since it came back onto the screens in 2005. That show has the ability to go anywhere, do anything, and be anyone (just like design)! A great unique piece of British television, and history.
